Digestion is an intimate, tranformative process. We take in raw materials from the outside world and transform them into the substances our bodies need for survival. What once had life in the plants and animals finds new life inour bodies.
Life feeds on life. Cultures thhat forge for their food are are very close to this transformative process. On a daily basis they must take the lives of plant and animals in order that their own lives may continue. Such peoples usually consider the act of eating to be very special, even and sacred. They give thanks to the Creator when they sit down to eat, and ask for His blessing before they partake of the food. They give thanks for a successful gathering or farming. Eating can be seen as a part of a natural cycle, knowing that when we die our bodies will become food for worms, plants or even animals...
